A Look Into Suffering Animals

images

What are the reasons we eat food? That might seem like a silly question, because we eat to feed our bodies, first of all. Many of us also obtain an emotional gratification when we eat, and most of us are omnivores, meaning we eat everything, including meat and poultry.

There are many compelling reasons to move towards a vegetarian diet, many of them health-related. But many people refuse to eat meat because of the inhumane treatment of the animals that are mass-produced to feed the population. Animal farming on the scale that it needs to be to satisfy U.S. consumption is grotesquely cruel. When you eat meat, you’re eating the flesh of an animal whose life has been artificially shortened by overfeeding it to get it to a slaughterhouse earlier. They’re kept in small pens and cages, where they endure chronic stress. If they bear their young live, their babies are taken from them, sometimes a day after they’re born. They’re fed growth hormones and antibiotics and kept from the natural behaviors and actions that characterize the normal life span. Pigs aren’t allowed to root. Calves are kept immobile. Chickens are kept in cages, their beaks seared off with a burning hot knife to thwart aggressive behaviors that are the result of unnatural confinement.

Do you really think the flesh of the animal is separate from its spirit and its energy? The agony and stress they endure in their shortened lives infuses every cell of their bodies. Consider that depression and stress can make humans ill, can infect our muscles and organs. Is an animal so very different? We don’t need meat or milk for survival. We’re no longer a hunting society; we’re merely a consuming society.

Isn’t it time we all started thinking differently of what we consume to nourish our bodies? We’re evolved from herbivores, and yet we’ve veered off our own evolutionary path. One can make a case for hunting and eating meat when it’s the only means for survival. But that’s no longer the case and our options are plentiful. Do they have to include the flesh of suffering animals? How can that possibly be considered nourishment?

Fascinating Animals of the Amazon

images7

A recent report by WWF revealed that a new species of plant or vertebrate is discovered every three days in the Amazon rainforest. The data comes from information collected over the last ten years and offers the stunning revelation that the Amazon is still a vastly unknown territory where a rich and diverse world of plantlife and animals has yet to be discovered. .

According to the report, an impressive 1,200 new species of vertebrates and plants has been discovered during the last decade, including creatures like new types of anacondas and parrots, showing off just how capable the rainforest is of harbouring a stunningly diverse range of life. On top of this, WWF has noted that this figure doesn’t even include the sheer wealth of invertebrate life that has been discovered, with total figures too numerous to list in the report.

Another thing that the findings have brought to light, however, is the crucial need for society to work harder than ever to conserve this incredible habitat for countless different plant and animal species, both undiscovered and known. What’s more, around thirty million humans call this tropical rainforest home, and at the rate that climate change, deforestation and the sapping of the Earth’s natural resources is going, the negative impact of these combined problems is only going to get worse.

When we think of the animal life of the Amazon, images of exotic, beautiful and fantastic creatures come to mind. Unfortunately, the habitat of these creatures is under threat and, even though it has been proven that there is still so much more to be discovered in this precious rainforest, there isn’t enough being done in order to conserve both the rainforest and its inhabitants.

If we want to ensure that new species continue to be discovered – such as the eye-catching fire and water frog that displays a pattern of flames on its head and a water pattern on its legs – then we must keep doing everything we can to prevent further damage to the delicate ecosystem of the Amazon. If you want to help the Amazon rainforest animals, it’s time to find out just how you can do your part – and encourage others to do so too! If everybody pulls their weight and works together, the impact towards helping save the rainforest could be immense – so see what you can do today!

Best Breeds Of Chickens For Pets

images5

Hopefully if you are reading this you are in the market for chickens and are planning on having a chicken coop or already have one in your yard. Chickens make amazing pets and will lay you fresh eggs every week. They will also eat bugs and pests which may cause harm to your yard and garden. So not only are they very friendly pets, they also will help around the yard! I have come up with a list of some of the better breeds to look into when deciding what kinds to buy. This is not a complete list, but should get you on your way to narrowing your choices down.

Australorps make great pets and lay brown eggs. They are known for being extremely friendly and can be picked up, these are great chickens if you have kids. These are usually brown or black chickens.

The Mille Fleur is the most popular chicken breed. They do very well as pets and are small birds, called bantam birds. The roosters in this breed can also be friendly sometimes. Another thing that makes these fun birds to have is that they are very colorful.

Plymouth Rock chickens lay brown eggs and are very friendly chickens, which make great pets. Barred Rock hens are the most common of this breed and have white and black striped feathers.

The next breed that are both great for laying eggs and as pets are the Rhode Island Reds and Whites. You should try to stay clear of the roosters in his breed though, as they can be pretty aggressive. These birds can handle most weather conditions without a complaint. This is probably the most famous chicken breed in the world and lays more eggs than almost any other chicken at about 260 a year.

The Wyandotte is a very nice looking bird and makes a great pet. They lay brown eggs. Some are not as friendly as others, but for the most part they get along well with people.

The Japanese Bantam is a smaller bird but has a large tail that points towards the sky. They are very cute birds, but don’t lay many eggs. If egg production isn’t your main concern I would look into this wonderful bird as it makes a great pet.

This list was not supposed to tell you the only breeds of chickens to buy, but hopefully gave you a start in narrowing down your search of which breeds you think will be best for your yard and family. Chickens are a ton of fun to have in your yard and garden and make great pets for the family while providing you with fresh eggs. I hope you enjoy having chickens as pets as much as I do. Good luck finding your perfect chickens!

Adjustable Pet Wheelchairs Give Animals New Freedom

images19

Dog Wheelchairs are for pets afflicted with hip dysplasia, paralysis, arthritis, degenerative myelopathy, intervertebral discs, spinal injury, amputation, or due to any other condition that may have affected their hindmost limbs.

If your beloved pet is incapable to live an energetic life because of any of these disabilities, then dog wheelchairs can be the answer to give your pet its much needed freedom. In order for the pets to be able to use wheelchairs, they need to have reasonably strong front legs to assist traction. (The pet ought to be capable of walking with the help of its forelimbs without falling over etc, except if it is caused by being paralytic for a long period.) Animals that have weak front legs and were not really active before their disability, may be better assisted by support harness with straps. With assistance from a wheelchair, your pet may enjoy most of its desired activities like running, walking, playing.

Animals that are limited by their weak hind legs benefit from Pet Carts, which allow them to exercise longer and with higher intensity. The pets that suffer from a degenerative disorder should be put on wheelchair before they lose their ability to move around by themselves. By doing so, the physical ill health of such dogs will be better than what it would be without wheelchairs. Canine Wheelchairs make superb aids for rehabilitation, especially if your pet is recovering from surgery. You can even rent them if your pet needs it temporarily. One commonplace question asked is whether the pet can urinate and defecate while using the wheelchair. Yes. The support harness with straps is specifically intended to let the animal defecate and urinate while in its wheelchair. Can you use a wheelchair for other animals besides dogs? Of course, they could be used on cats as well. Dog Mobility Aids are even intended for animals such as goats, ferrets and rabbits.

In case your pet has weak forelimbs and needs your assistance for small walks or going up and down the stairs, there are also the harness straps supports which come separately with these k9 wheelchairs. The idea is to give your older dog the right type of support.

There are two types of dog wheelchairs, custom and adjustable. The older custom Dog Carts are quickly becoming obsolete. They require dozens of measurements, take weeks to build, and cannot be adjusted as the dog changes and grows. New adjustable wheelchairs can be ordered overnight without complex measurements, adjusted to fit your dog perfectly, and fitted to another dog in the future if re-sold or donated.

The Bird Eye – An Organ Wild Animals Cannot Live Without

images14

The name “bird’s eye” has been given to many companies and mapping mechanisms. Who could forget Bird’s Eye vegetables? There are many applications that want you to make the connection between the bird eye and high quality products or software that can show map details for miles. The bird’s eye is a remark that is often tossed around when someone is referring to a high vantage spot that allows them to see the lay of the land for several miles. How much do we owe these wild animals?

Did you know that your eye and the bird’s eye have many of the same structural features? Both the human eye and the bird eye have a cornea, retina, iris, lens, anterior chamber and eyelids. Some of these structures function in the same way for both humans and wild birds/domesticated birds.

The obvious difference is the size of the eye in comparison to the rest of the body. A starling’s eye is 15% of their body mass, whereas a human’s eye is only 1%.

The size of the eye depends on the bird species. Owls, for example, have huge eyes that allow them to take in more at once. For a wild bird that is important because it means that they can spot enemies and their prey much easier. Owls cannot move their eyes so they rotate their heads.

How far do they rotate their heads? They rotate a whopping 200 degrees. Another difference to be found is the number of eyelids a bird has over humans. The human eye only has an upper and lower eyelid.

All species of birds have three eyelids. They have an upper, lower and a nictitating membrane that cleans and protects the eye. Another difference is in the positioning of the eyes.

Humans and most wild animals, especially predators, have eyes that are not as centralized as a bird’s eye. A bird’s eye is on the front of the skull and they lack the ability to see very far to the sides. This is why birds turn their heads often.

Human’s can get by without their eyesight. There are many devices and advancements in medical science that allow for humans to compensate for vision loss. Wild birds do not have this luxury.

If their eyesight is damaged, then they will undoubtedly starve or die without outside help from a conservation or rescue group. The bird eye may just be an organ but it is one that these two legged, winged wild animals cannot live without.

It is better to bring your pet in home before fire work starts, try to put large cotton ear balls in their ears so that they are not so disturbed by sound.

NEVER make your pet accustomed to the sound, some pet lovers try to do this with thinking that the pet will get used to the sound and will not be frightened anymore. Contrary to this the pet will become more aggressive and will be frightened more. Remember that on certain things humans and animals do not responds in the same manner.

Pets In The Classroom Program Launches New Grant Options

images9

The Pet Care Trust is pleased to announce an expansion of its successful Pets in the Classroom program through partnerships with pet supply retailer Pet Supermarket and science and math education supplier Carolina Biological Supply.

The new partnerships will provide elementary school teachers with six different grant options to aid in funding a classroom pet, allowing teachers to find the option most suitable to his or her needs. We are delighted to have the support of a growing number of pet product companies that understand the importance of teaching kids about responsible pet care, commented Pet Care Trust executive director Steve King. In the next few weeks, we will issue our 10,000th Pets in the Classroom grant, and the number of grants will continue to grow rapidly thanks to the generous support of all our sponsors.

Pet Supermarket, a chain of more than130 pet stores located primarily in the Southeastern U.S., will become the third pet retailer to partner with the Trust to provide a custom coupon grant for teachers through the Pets in the Classroom program. Specialty pet retailers PETCO and PetSmart began issuing custom coupons for teachers last fall and have provided more than 4,000 classroom grants to date. These grant options provide approved teachers with coupons redeemable at retail stores for the essential supplies required for the classroom pet, as well as a coupon valued at 50% off the everyday retail price of the animal.

Carolina Biology Supply, the largest supplier of science kits to schools throughout the U.S., will aid the Trust in providing a grant option specifically for teachers interested in obtaining fish for their classroom. The Carolina Biological Supply Grant will provide the teachers who opt for this grant option with an aquarium and three GloFish that will be shipped directly to them.

The other two successful grant options available to teachers include the Rebate Grant, which allows teachers to purchase a new classroom pet and supplies and receive reimbursement from the program for up to $150, and the Sustaining Grant, which allows teachers with existing classroom pets to be reimbursed up to $50 each year for needed pet supplies.

Using Animals To Control Duckweed

images14

Duckweed can be a major problem if it is allowed to grow without any restrictions on a small, still pond or lake. Moving water can help to deter the growth of duckweed but in some ponds it is not possible to have moving water. In these cases one option to control duckweed is to use animals that will eat duckweed as a food source. There are many different animals that regularly eat duckweed and that can be introduced to your pond to help contain its growth. Ducks, (obviously), fish, geese, turtles, and other animals are all known to eat duckweed. Having some of these animals living in or around your pond can have a noticeable difference in the surface coverage of duckweed and pond health.

So what animals eat duckweed?

Many tropical and freshwater fish are known to eat duckweed when it is found in their environment. In fact the duck-weed plant is a favorite food source for tilapia and carp fish farmers. Tilapia in particular are a great fish for controlling duckweed growth due to their own fast growth rate, and their voracious appetite for duckweed and other aquatic plants. At the end of the year you can even harvest your Tilapia before your pond freezes for a great fish meal. Before introducing fish to any pond or body of water make sure you check your local rules and regulations, as it is illegal to introduce non-native fish in some areas.

Waterfowl such as ducks and geese can also eat enough duckweed to help to control it, but these animals alone are generally not enough to keep duckweed in check, and often additional methods and/or other animals are needed to keep a pond healthy.

There are also many mammals that make duckweed a major part of their diet. Some North American examples are muskrats, beaver, woodchucks, and other small rodents. Reptiles and amphibians also occasionally eat duckweed. Snakes, turtles, and frogs are all known to eat the duckweed plant. However like waterfowl, these animals are generally not enough to control duckweed by themselves, but when combined with other methods and animals they can be part of a comprehensive pond duckweed control plan.

So if duckweed is taking over your pond, making an ugly, smelly eyesore, consider some natural weed control methods before resorting to more expensive, and potentially harmful chemical treatments.

Please visit the author’s site for more information on how to control duckweed, as well as more in depth information about what animals eat duckweed and other methods for removing duckweed from your pond or lake.
